Hensley with the Gulf Coast League Yankees in 2012.
Ty Hensley was the first round pick for the New York Yankees in the 2012 MLB Draft. He took some time to share some experiences that he had in the Minor Leagues. While receiving a significant signing bonus as a first round selection, Ty points out that some of his teammates were not so fortunate.
"... if we are talking about just salary in general, it’s public knowledge that ($)1000-1500 a month is not doable for most people. I saw a lot of guys over the years work other jobs during the season to get by.
I think Minor Leaguers should be compensated fairly based off of the hours and work they put in year round. Sports are demanding on the body, and proper compensation for hard work is expected at every job so why should baseball be different? It needs to keep getting better. I was fortunate to not have to worry, but I saw instances where guys would be stressed and have to contemplate quitting because they already had families they needed to provide for."
