Fick with the Astros in 2012.
Charles Fick was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 15th round of the 2007 MLB Draft from Cal State Northridge. Fick spent parts of six seasons in the Minor Leagues before making his Big League debut with the Cardinals in 2012. Charles reached out to us, excited about what we were doing as an organization and eager to help in any way possible. He shared his experience with us and reaffirmed stories from other players. We have heard about the importance of supportive families and the unfortunate reality that not all players have that luxury. If a player's family cannot offer financial assistance, the MiLB grind is even more difficult and oftentimes impossible.
"I was a 15th rounder in 2007 and it took me 5 years to get 65 days in the Big Leagues. My parents paid for my cell phone and probably gave me about $2,000 a year to help with random bills, and my credit was jacked for years because I got taken to collection over a cable bill years ago.
I work for a large business insurance firm now. It seems like a lot of guys are starting businesses and who better to work with than a former player?
I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my parents. Being 25 years old and living at home with barely any income is brutal."
